SAT Communication

SAT or a satellite network are used to communicate in remote regions or where there is no reliable terrestrial network.

  • Iridium satellite constellation – EMA is capable of transferring data over Iridium SBD protocol, which allows subscribers to send data in small packages. This coverage includes the standard worldwide coverage, and also sea area A4 (essentially the Polar Regions, north and south of about 76 degrees of latitude). If a customer needs both global and and arctic coverage, Iridium is the only choice. Competitor Inmarsat’s Mini C is not capable of reaching sea area A4. Iridium is used for lowering the cost of tracking, for file transfer, and short messages, and gives online worldwide coverage. Iridium is currently developing, and is expected to launch beginning in 2015, Iridium NEXT a second-generation worldwide network of telecommunications satellites, consisting of 66 satellites and six in-orbit and nine ground spares. Iridium NEXT will bring new data transfer advantages. EMA already uses the SBD modem, because it lowers the data transfer costs for customers.

Also important is that EMA has developed an adapter board that will allow subscribers to use the old data records with the new satellite technology. Customers choose Iridium because soon the arctic area will become a major shipping lane and Iridium’s coverage will be more important. EMA offers sea area A4 arctic devices that can withstand the extreme conditions.
